Lots of Talking and Eating

Edison is hilarious. I'm sure most parents think that about their children, so I guess it's good that we think so too. Edison seems to be developing his own sign language these days. He has distinct signs for spider (which he learned from the song - itsy bitsy spider), hungry, and dog (which is a sniffing thing he does whenever he sees Zeke or hears a dog barking). We have captured these on video for those of you who really like to see Edison in living color...

He also frequently surprises us with demonstrations of how much he understands, or how much he has learned from watching us. Just yesterday I brought him downstairs to the kitchen, where the cats were awaiting breakfast. While I was getting some water, he went straight to the cabinet where the cat food is, opened it, picked up the cat food scooper, opened the cat food container, scooped some food, and poured it into the cats' dish. Today he found one of his dirty diapers sitting on his potty. I asked him where the dirty diapers go, and he picked up the diaper, took it to the diaper bucket, and put it in. It's amazing how much kids understand even if they can't talk!

In the last week we have also introduced a new toothbrush - the spin brush. This was recommended to me by my co-worker who had a baby at the same time as I did. She is (self described) obsessed with her daughters' teeth and said the spinbrushes were much better tolerated than regular brushes. And lo and behold, she was right! Edison does so much better with toothbrush-time, it's great. Maria was even nice enough to give us an extra brush she had at home - so Edison has his own pink Hello Kitty brush. Awesome.

We've also been working on ways to get Edison to tolerate riding in his stroller while we walk Zeke. This week we let him hold my I-pod with a little portable speaker. We had tried just playing music several times, but letting him actually control the music has worked wonders. We have had 3 successful dog-walks in a row...hopefully this keeps up!

Ok - Edison is heading for the stairs as we speak. The little climber will be down them in a minute, so I better go and watch him....

"It's so cute on me, but is it safe to wear?"

"I mean, it's a hoodie."

"I don't wanna get harpooned...here, let's try it like this..."

"Ahh, you can't get me now because I'm invisible."

Edison is beginning to climb everything.

Edison's 1st B-Day!

We're finally getting over the birthday festivities, and finding time to post some photos from the big day! (as well as some photos from the week or two before..). Our special guests - Pamma and Aunt Sam - have gone back home, but we all really enjoyed their visit. And we know it will only be a couple of months before we see them again - back in the Midwest. Specifically St. Joseph, MI for us, since that is where we're heading next (woo-hoo!).

Edison's birthday seemed to be a success. The morning started with some gifts, followed by Skype calls from grandparents and uncles, followed by a breakfast of pancakes at the beach (even though Edison slept through breakfast). We then headed off to the pool for the afternoon, and had a homemade dinner of various Edison-approved favorites such as sweet potato fries and macaroni and cheese. Edison loved his cake and gifts, and did NOT want the day to end - as evidenced by his manic running around the kitchen shaking balloons until about 10pm that night.

Unfortunately, all the excitement came to a crashing halt shortly thereafter, when Edison came down with his most recent bug and a 102 fever. At least it was fun while it lasted.

Since the last post, Edison has had his first dental visit, which I can say I'm glad I missed, as well as his 1 year old check up. He semi-tolerates tooth brushing now, but would rather just chew on the brush himself. He is also understanding a lot of words, but still doesn't really say any. He is close on some things - like bubbles are bubas. He has taken more to grabbing our hands and taking us to what he wants (which is pretty often the refrigerator), or just pointing at things. I think Damon and I are both excited about this level of communication since it makes it much easier to figure out why he's upset...

What else? Well, scroll through the photos (there are quite a few) to see! And don't miss the video at the end - I think it's pretty funny, then again I think most of what Edison does is funny :)

You see, right-side up babies don't do it for him.

What better way to celebrate his 1st.
