July and August Summer Times

I can't believe it's already September! The summer went by waaayyyy too fast. I'm hoping we at least have another month or two of warm-ish weather before the winter sets in again! Before we get to the quotes (my favorite part), and the photos (my 2nd favorite part), I have to mention the highlights from the last two months (this is my electronic babybook after all!)

July:
Let's see, so on 7/9 I made a note to myself that Adlai had started clapping and drinking from his sippy cup. I think Damon may have stopped warming up his milk too - why have warm breastmilk when you can have it chilled?! He had also mastered getting off the bed feet-first and could climb the entire staircase at that point. As a sidenote, one of his favorite activities now (ever since he discovered slides at the playground), is to climb our stairs and then slide down them on his stomach, feet first. And when I say slide, this kid is moving. I can hardly stay ahead of him to spot him.

We got to hang out with friends - we spent the 4th with Phoenix and Devlin and went to the beach, went to several Friday night concerts downtown, and spent a day at the Binder zoo with Ethan and (baby) Caleb.  Edison also got to see his first movie at the movie theater - Planes Fire and Rescue! Damon reports that he was entranced the entire time.

August:
August was a big month! We visited Pamma and Aunt Sam to have cake and kick off her birthday week. We took a family vacation to Madison, which was really pretty kid-friendly. We went to the fair the day before our trip, went on Adlai's first Amtrak ride to Chicago, went on a hike through a cave, visited an amusement park, went to a wedding at a Children's Museum (most fun wedding with kids ever! Thanks Kyle and Alex!), came home and visited with Megan and her family (yes, my high school and college roommate, Megan!), and then saw several family members over Labor Day weekend. I'm excited that Edison thoroughly enjoyed the Scrambler and Tilt-a-Whirl, although we'll have to work on the roller coaster since he was not such a fan.

On 8/9 I made a note that Adlai started saying 'mama', although I think 'mama' may mean mama/food/hungry to him. I like being interchangeable with food. He was signing for more and hungry, and started giving high-5's. We also had an incident in Muncie where Adlai put a wooly worm in his mouth. I think everyone involved may still have PTSD from that occurrence. If you want to hear the whole story, ask one of us. Long story short, wooly worms are not soft - those hairs actually have barbed spikes on the ends that are very good at getting stuck in tongues. If you can imagine what your tongue would look like if you sucked on a cactus, that's about what Adlai's mouth looked like. It was horrendous. But, fortunately we got him fixed up and back to his normal self after about 5 hrs.

As of now, 9/9, Adlai is able to open the front door and let himself outside. He also lets Zeke out back, can climb into his highchair, and loves going down slides. His first tooth popped up on 9/1, and I just felt the 2nd one today. I thought that kid would never get teeth!

Edison has made great progress with swimming this summer - he swims with his face underwater, and seems to have no fear. I think it's time we get him in classes.... Edison has also developed several alter egos this summer. When he is good or pleasant, he might be Edison, but is more like to be Firefighter Sticker or Firefighter Squirts. If he is being naughty, he is either Rip (as in Ripslinger, from Planes), or Naughty Emmet. I generally hope that each day is a Firefighter day....

Ok - so there's that! If you read all that, you are probably a grandparent.

For the non-grandparents among you, here are the quotes and photos!

Sitting at the beach on the 4th of July:
Dad: Edison! Look up in the sky!
Mom: Oh look! It's a big bird!
E: I think that's a red tailed hawk.
(and it was)

At the playground:
Mom: Hey Edison, why don't you introduce yourself to some other kids and play tag? Just say, Hi, my name is Edison. What's your name?
E: Ok.
(a few minutes later, Edison is standing by another boy)
E: Hey. What's your name? I'm Firefighter Sticker.
Boy: (staring)
E: I have a badge from the fire station.
(this conversation was repeated 15 minutes later with another group of kids)

Me: Edison, do you want to go to the zoo tomorrow?
E: Yeah.
Me: Good! You can feed something with a really long neck there...
E: A turtle?
Me: No...something big with a really long neck.
E: (smiling) Is it tall and eats leaves off trees?!
Me: Yes!
E: Is it a brachiosaurus?!!

Me: (eating some rice pudding)
E: Mom, don't eat all that!
Me: Ok. I won't.
E: Mom, you can have two more bites, then you need to put that in the refrigerator.

E: Mom! Chase me!
Me: Edison, it's very late, I don't have the energy.
E: Mom, you need to exercise.

E: Mom, I'm getting so big.
Me: Yes, you are.
E: I think I'm a big boy.
Me: Oh? Well, you are pretty big.
E: I think I'll have my wedding soon.
Me: Oh?! Who are you going to marry?
E: I think I'll marry....you!
Me: Well, I did already marry your dad.
E: You married dad? Dad already had your wedding? Why?

Dad: good morning sleepy head.  What were you dreaming about?
E: ...Poop.
Dad: what was the poop doing?
E: it was climbing your closet door.
Dad: and then what did it do?
E: it climbed on to the ceiling.
Dad: then what did the poop do?
E: It dropped.
Dad: then what happened?
E: a choo-choo train squished it.

E: Mom, what are you doing?
Mom: I’m folding clothes, what are you doing?
E: I’m playing with my weiner.

E: Someday you’re going to eat strawberry sauce.
Dad: Someday you’re going to wipe your nose.
E: Someday you’re going to poop on a chair.

Dad: Did you poop?
E: Yeah. They’re floating around like astronauts

Dad: Are you done?
E: Yeah.  I want you to wipe me.
Dad: You don’t want Adlai to do it?
E: No, he would just eat the poop.

Ema: What do you want for dinner, Pasta or pizza?
Edison: Pista.
