March and April Madness

Ok - a March and April update! So, I can't really remember what happened in March and April, but I'll try to let the photos jog my memory. And then we'll have to do the May update soon...

Having a 2nd child, I am now realizing how well this blog works as a baby-book. Or at least how well it worked for Edison. We haven't been quite as good or detailed so far with Adlai's first year, but I guess something is better than nothing.

So. What did we do in March? Well, it was still really cold and snowy. So we played inside a lot. We attempted to go sledding, and I think I was the only person who had fun. We journeyed over to the Shedd Aquarium one day to revisit the place where Damon and I met. A lot has changed there...and not always for the better. There were still nice exhibits though, and Edison got to see a real scuba diver in action. And out of three questions asked by audience members during the Q&A session, two came from Edison.

In April we visited Pamma for her birthday. We saw an odd Dr. Insecta show at the Muncie Children's Museum, where Dr. Insecta wore fancy leather boots and harassed small children until they cried. Edison did enjoy his live scorpion though.

Adlai had his 6 month check-up. He was still above the 99th% for length and 84% for weight. Following right along his growth curve. He loves eating - if you are ever eating around him, be prepared to share. Otherwise one of three things will happen: He will protest. Loudly. He will use brute force to take your food from you. Or you will willingly give him some. I haven't really found a food he won't eat yet. Then again, paper and dirt seem to be his favorite things to munch on, so I guess he has low standards right now.

Edison's b-day was full of interesting occurrences. We decided to go to Indianapolis for a family b-day party - with a plan to visit the Indianapolis Children's Museum and stay at a hotel with a water park. We got to the Museum early, and Edison was ok at first, but then started acting sleepy and uninterested. While standing next to the sand table, Edison tried to lick my face, and as he was doing that, projectile vomited. Everywhere. It was pretty disgusting. So we left. Ema was with us, and we made our way back to the hotel, where Edison suddenly got better. And ended up having a great time in the hotel pool. As you will see below. For his actual birthday, we went to the Baroda firestation, with the intention of going for a ride in the firetruck. However, Edison was afraid to actually ride in a real truck, so we just tried on fire clothes and took pictures. Then the highlight: we went to a toy store where he got to pick out 3 toys for his b-day. I think that, and the pool, were the best parts of the whole b-day experience.

For his 6-month b-day, Adlai celebrated by full-on crawling. And now he is everywhere - crawling, standing, grabbing things, riding in Edison's toys, stealing big-boy toys, etc. It's funny hearing Edison try to teach Adlai about sharing - especially when most (or ALL) of his toys have been designated as "big-boy toys". Meaning - babies cannot touch them.

Edison has recently discovered some imaginary friends around the house. That has been interesting. He also has an alter-ego - his name is "Firefighter Chops". There are days that we can only refer to him as such, although in general I find we get a better response if we just start out by calling him that. We don't know the names of his friends yet, Edison was reluctant to ask them the other day. Although Damon informs me that one was identified as Firefighter Chips. Then again, Zeke has been renamed Dalmation Chips...so I'm not sure if Firefighter and Dalmation Chips are the same. There is also a police officer who roams our property - nameless, but he has black hair, a mustache, wears jeans, and a police hat with a star on the front. Just in case you see him.

Edison is also working on his ornithology skills. He can correctly identify several birds - rose breasted grossbeak, downy woodpecker, red bellied woodpecker, nuthatch, goldfinch, oriole, cardinal...etc. I'm often pretty surprised when he points them out. I think he does better than me.

Oh! And he is reading! That's actually been really exciting - I have to put this in here for baby-book purposes. But he is sounding out words and reading them. Soon I'll be able to put him to work reading to his brother!

Ok, now for the quotes:

E: (patting a wet spot on the bed) "I know where I slept last night. Right here!"

Daddy: (playing with a T-rex) Mmm, I'm a carnivore, I want something to eat.
E: Here.
Daddy: What's this?
E: It's ice-cream meat.
Daddy: Oh wow, my favorite. How do you make it?
E: You take a cow and turn it into sausage, then smoosh it up and add it to ice cream.

Daddy: Edison, you have a giant booger dripping out of your nose. Let me go get a tissue.
.....
Daddy: Edison, where did your booger go?
E: It just flew away.

E: I have to take a doody.
Daddy: You have to take a dump?
E: Yeah, my booty is like a dump truck.

E: I drew a bi-angle.

E: Did Adlai do a volcano in his diaper?

Daddy: Edison, yuck, stop blowing your nose on Adlai's feet.
E: They're tissues.

Upon realizing he will not be able to have his pacifier any more (yes, we let him have it until his b-day)
E: I don't want to be three. I want to be two, I want my birthday to go away. Adlai wants to be three.

Me: So Edison, tomorrow you're going to see the dentist. His name is Dr. Steele.
E: Dr. Steele? Does he steal things?

E: Mommy, now you can only call me Firefighter Chops.
Me: Oh? Where did that name come from?
E: From a dandelion.

E: Next Halloween I'm going to be a T. Rex.
Me: Ok, that sounds good.
E: And Daddy's going to be a firefighter.
Me: Good. What am I going to be?
E: A doody.
Me: A doody?! Yuck.
E: And Adlai will be a doody too.

Along those lines, while in line at Meijer the other day, Edison start (randomly) shouting: "Big Mommy Doody! Big Mommy Doody!"
Good thing only half of my patients shop there.

The whole family is actually in this photo.

Edison's packing job for Puerto Rico.

Adlai finds the warmest spot outside.

Not sure how this happened.

What timing!

Our trip to Antarctica...was brief.

Sledding was briefer.

Ah, good times on the pot.

Good times with Great Hilary!

The documentation of a very rare occurrence, the only way Adlai has ever put himself to sleep.

So does Daddy.

Adlai prefers to hold the bottle himself.

"Get back here Zeke, you're under arrest."

Yes!  Daddy and Mommy don't have to get Edison cups anymore.

Grandpa Lonn cradles Adlai before his prom.

Edison feeding Grandpa popcorn at the carousel.

Adlai completely okay with Bridget being a substitute mommy.

Adlai sitting up, no strings attached.

Adlai standing up, Grandpa Marshall attached.

Caught French kissing.

Mistakes happen when a fire fighter has to get ready in a hurry.

Adlai slumping forward, no strings attached.

Adlai and a bed full of toys.

Edison fixated on the scuba diver at the Shedd Aquarium.

"What in the world is that?"

"Oh man Adlai, did you see that?"

"They're real, did you see that?!"

"So spiritual!"

"Oh woah, hey there bro."

A is for AIG

Brushing Edison's teeth is finally getting easier.

Adlai paying close attention to what his older brother is doing; this is just the beginning folks.

Here's April:

Adlai happy to be out of that carseat.

Adlai and his pile of ketchup, just kidding, it's an apple slice.

See Zeke is yawning, no wait, actually his mouth is closed.

Pamma and the Boys.

Edison and his hat(s).

Zeke finding Adlai to have quite the cushy tushie.

We found him swaddled like this somewhere away in a manger.

Peek-a-bathtime-boozies!

Yeah, Edison's done riding, now Adlai gets to go for his first trike ride.

"If I had known Adlai was going to ride it, I never would have gotten off!"

Adlai gnawing on some celery.

Happy again to be out of that carseat.

Adlai's favorite food, caesar salad (made with the raw ingredients of: a can of anchovies, tons of garlic, lemon juice, worcester sauce, black pepper and olive oil).

Happy Birthday Edison!

Mommy and Ema carry a sick Edison and tired Adlai out of Indy's Children Museum.

Edison feels a bit better after finding an excavator to cuddle up to.

A little bummed not many people came to his birthday party, but that's ok...

This is his type of party anyway.

"Happy Birthday big brother!"

Another water baby.

LeRoy and Edison working as a team to find the most Easter eggs.

Adlai working on eating the most Easter eggs.

"Wait Devlin, this doesn't hurt, just hold still and smile, he does this a lot."

Edison waking up to his real birthday day.

Adlai not sure if he's going to like April 22nds for now on.

Exactly 6 months on the left, and 3 years on the right.

Exactly cute.

The three hermanos.

"Oh, I can now see how this can be an obsession."
