So what has everyone been up to for the last 4 months? Well, Edison has been in school - where he (much to his delight) was introduced to Twinkies earlier this spring. Now, I'm just going to say that I think Twinkies are about as good for you as cigarettes, so we had a little chat about Little Debbie snacks in general after that. Now Edison points out the 'death shelf' every time we go to the grocery (it's rather prominently displayed at the Benton Harbor Meijer). I feel like he's doing a public service to anyone in earshot. They've been swimming at school this spring as well, which is nice since Edison loves to swim. They placed him (the only Kindergartner) with the 2nd and 3rd graders swim group. Apparently he's been learning to swim along the bottom - which is the best way to swim, in my opinion. You can really sneak up on people that way - which I suspect Edison has already realized. I have also realized that they listen to a lot of pop music at school. I'm not sure what they're doing when they listen to all of these songs, but Edison knows an awful lot of the songs that are on constant repeat in my office. It took me several months to realize that when he kept singing "dancing to the fire", over and over again, he was actually singing lyrics from Katy Perry's 'Roar'. He also loves a certain One Direction song, and sings that as well. I have wondered if my parents felt the same way about Michael Jackson that I feel about One Direction.....We have also discovered that the radio booth at the children's museum has these songs in their play-able list - so now Adlai and Edison will spend at least 20 minutes listening to and singing both songs over and over again every time we're there.
Aside from that, school has been the same, and is almost over! (yes!!) Edison continues to come up with great costumes so he can be whoever he is for that day, is working on new (terrifying) tricks on his bike, got the courage to ride his scooter down some of the hills at the skate park, is improving his writing every day, and is generally very protective of his two younger siblings (unless Adlai tries to wear his old underwear or shorts - in which case Edison becomes more protective of the old clothes that are too small for him now). I have wondered if his teachers think we just don't buy this child appropriately sized clothes since he insists on wearing (what are now) Adlai's (short) shorts or pants to school sometimes...Edison also has had a big milestone in losing his first tooth! It was loose for a while, then one day at school he just pulled it out, put it in his pocket, and apparently didn't tell anyone. Which is weird because this tooth still had a long root attached - so he had to have pulled pretty hard. But then he was afraid of the tooth fairy taking his tooth, so she ended up leaving it for him, which he was very relieved about.
Adlai has been entertaining as usual. He's become much more talkative over the last several months, and continues to (more eloquently) express his true feelings about people or events... He started swimming when we took a vacation to Florida in February. Pretty much just jumped in the pool without a lifejacket - after we told him not to - and just swam to the other side. I feel like that event alone really sums him up pretty well. He still loves puzzles and is doing increasingly more challenging ones. Which means it is increasingly more difficult to keep track of the pieces when Miriam gets ahold of them. Adlai is very excited about starting preschool next year - and constantly tells us he's ready for school. I'm glad he only has 2 half days per week. He's getting better about sleeping through the night - which has been exciting. There have been several nights that he hasn't come down to our room at 5am or woken up Edison - woo hoo!
Miriam has probably changed the most in the last few months. She is many times a small, sassy version of her brothers. She has learned how to say 'NO!' - so when someone makes her mad, she lets them know it. For example, you are reading a book to Adlai and Edison and she wants you to read her book. She will walk up to you, grab the book from your hands, shout "No!" and throw it. Then calmly hand you the book she prefers. I will admit, it's very hard not to laugh at this behavior. I know I need to tell her it's rude, but it's also hilarious. I mean, it will be hilarious until she's 16 and we're arguing about her driving somewhere....Anywho, she's consistently pooping on the potty (yes!!!!!) She lets us know by saying (what sounds a lot like) Poop-butt, or Poopa. This has been great. Now to work on the peeing so she can get out of diapers! She already realizes that she doesn't like the cloth diapers anymore...so hopefully that will be motivation. She's gotten several teeth and says a lot of words now. I don't have a clue how many, but there are a lot. And her favorite words right now? Me and No. Her favorite words to sign are want and please. Things she really, really likes: bugs (she loves them - all of them), poop, entropy (she is compelled to pull everything out of drawers, dump anything in a container, etc), climbing (something the boys never did around the house), animals in general, family members she knows, eating frozen fruit and frozen sausages, and doing whatever her brothers are doing. Things she does not like: her carseat, someone besides her sitting on my lap, having her hair brushed, her cloth diapers, teething, being told no.
So I think that pretty much sums everyone up from the last several months (or at least what I can remember of them....) Now on to the quotes and pictures!
Quotes
Me: (talking to Damon) Adlai’s not a giant three-year old.
Adlai: Yes, I AM big. I have hair growing.
Me: You have hair growing? Where?
A: Here. I have hair on my legs.
Me: Oh, I see. You do have a little hair.
A: And soon I’ll have hair on my face. Like you guys.
A: Look mom, I put an A here for Adlai!
Me: Well, that’s a K.
A: It’s for K-Adlai!
In the Meijer parking lot
Me: Adlai, Hold my hand please.
A: Mom, why do you always need to hold someone’s hand?
Me: So I can stay safe!
A: I don’t need to hold a hand!
A: Look! It’s coming out! (referring to the sun)
E: What?! What’s coming out?! Is Miriam having a baby??!!
E: (looking at his school notebook) Mom! You’re not supposed to scribble in here!
Me: What? What are you talking about?
E: You SCRIBBLED in my notebook!
Me: No I didn’t. Where?
E: Right here!
Me: That’s my signature...
E: What?! No. That’s a scribble.
E: When is Clint getting here?
Me: Tomorrow afternoon. He’s helping Pamma get more stuff out of her Muncie house.
E: What else does she have in there?! Are they cutting out the toilets? Is she going to bring back her toilets and put a toilet in every room so we don’t have to run to use the bathroom?
A: Mom, I want to turn on the vacuum.
Me: Why do you want to vacuum, Adlai?
A: For joy!
E: Mom, please go to McDonald’s for ice cream!
Me: We can’t, guys, it’s late and we’re not close to a McDonald’s.
E: Pleeaaassseee, I want ice cream!
Me: No, there aren’t any McDonald’s near here.
A: Mom! It’s NOT far, McDonald’s is EVERYwhere!
E: What do your tonsils look like?
A: Come here, I'll show you. (Al opens her mouth)
E: Woah, what is that!?
A: What?
E: There's a penis in your mouth!
A: That's my uvula.
E: It looks like a penis.
E: What do your tonsils look like?
A: Come here, I'll show you. (Al opens her mouth)
E: Woah, what is that!?
A: What?
E: There's a penis in your mouth!
A: That's my uvula.
E: It looks like a penis.
