February - June, and a summer update

So, I was trying to organize these photos chronologically, but it is taking a very long time for me to accomplish the task. So instead I've decided to just work on the blog post part before I forget everything that's happened. I'm beginning to mentally prepare for posts that involve the updates of 3 children instead of two - I'm not sure how I'll keep them all straight, and I suspect #3 (Sliggy) is going to have a sparse record of events :) So I think I'll try with this post to update each one's progress over the last 2 1/2 months.

So far the pregnancy seems pretty on track. Sliggy has high movement days and low movement days, just like its siblings. Some days at work I call big days (where patients inform me I look "BIG!", too big to make it to November, in fact), and some days are small days (Oh, you look too small, you can't have big babies). I'm pretty sure it's the clothing I choose for the day. We've had both ultrasounds, and after the 2nd the tech made a comment to the effect of "Oh, you have two boys". Which Damon and I interpreted completely opposite - of course. So we don't know what we're having, although I will say that a large human infant is a safe bet.

Adlai's probably had the most developmental changes this summer.  Really July was a huge month for him. We've potty trained him (21 months old, hallelujah! no diapers before the new baby!), and he even survived a week of copious diarrhea without an accident. So I am SUPER excited about this. I've decided that the way to go is just let them be naked so they learn to really dislike wearing diapers. He's also been having a word explosion lately. Both Adlai and Edison are signed up for these infant development studies, and Adlai's done three language studies so far this summer. It's interesting because every time you go in, you have to complete this really long word survey, and seeing how much his language has changed over the summer is really neat. Granted, 75% of the words he says are probably only interpretable by Damon and I, but as long as we're there to interpret, it's ok. I'm wondering if getting his teeth has helped. His molars came in during the early summer, and now all of his I-teeth are coming in at once.

Edison has also had a good summer so far. He's done three weeks of camp - two at the YMCA and one at the Children's Museum. He liked the Y camp well enough, but really, really disliked the Museum Camp. We couldn't figure out why exactly, although as best I can figure, some of the other kids were not too nice. So we won't try that one again. He's become very good at scootering and is starting to ride a 2-wheel bike on his own. He's also getting really good at swimming! Now that he has a pool to practice in all the time (since Pamma moved to the neighborhood), he's swimming underwater, above water, and everywhere! He also paddle-boarded for the first time and did awesome! He's still in the superhero phase, although we've had to cut down on superhero stories since he's been a bit more wild and obstinate lately. Fortunately we had a fun day with our friends Amy and Lee from Oregon, and their kids Milo and Phoebe - and Milo introduced Edison to Shaun the Sheep. Let's hope his mutual love of Shaun sticks....

In general life, we just got a minivan. That was exciting. We're trying to fix up the downstairs as well since Damon finished the fireplace down there. The mosquitoes have been horrendous this year. I mean, absolutely horrendous. The last month we haven't been able to leave the house. If I could somehow enact a giant mosquito-cide, I would. And other than that, I can't think of anything too big to document. I haven't been good with the quotes, but I think I have a few to put here... And then the photos! And good news! We recovered the Mexico pictures from February - so we'll start there!

(while on a walk in the woods with Great Hilary)
E: Here, I found some wild onions for you to try.
GH: Thank you, Edison.
(GH eating the onions)
GH: Mmmm, where did you find these?
E: Over there, right next to the poison ivy.

(in the bath after Adlai pushed him)
E: Adlai, there's another baby coming and he's going to hit YOU!

(at Pamma's house)
E: Mom, have I had dessert yet?
Me: No, is there something you want?
E: Yeah, something from there (pointing at the freezer).
Me: I don't think there's anything in there.
E: Yes, I think there are popsicles or something.
Me: (looking in the freezer) Well, you're right, there are popsicles in the freezer. How did you know that?
E: I used my popsicle senses.

E: Mom, I think it's pretty warm out. I think we should go to the ice cream shop.
Me: How about if we just make some banana splits at home?
E: What?! We don't have any ice cream you crazy woman!

(Edison comes inside with an angry face)
E: Dad just thinks I'm a big turdface.
Me: Oh? Why?
E: He thinks I can't keep my balance on the skateboard and I'll just fall off.
Me: Hmm.
E: I think HE'S a big turdface.

(putting on his knee and elbow pads)
E: These will keep me from cutting up my knees.
Me: Yeah, you might want to just wear these all the time.
E: I was just thinking, we should call up the company that makes these.
Me: Oh? Why?
E: So we can ask them if they can make face pads and neck pads.

Me: So, Edison, what job do you want to have when you get big?
E: A doctor.
Me: Uhhhh, what kind of a doctor do you have in mind?
E: A surgeon.
Me: Hmm, well, ok. What do you think Adlai will do?
E: He's going to fix alarms.

Me: Did you ever meet Terrin?
E: Who's Terrin?
Me: He was a cat we had who lived to be over 100 yrs old.
E: Did you have to give him glasses?
Me: Hahah - what? Why would we give him glasses?
E: So he could see. Because he was old.

Dr. Heenan: So, do you know what NASA does?
E: Things in space.
Dr. H: And do you know what happened this week with NASA?
E: A module went by Pluto.
Dr. H: Well, yes!

Woman: What’s your name?
Edison: Superman.
Woman: Haha. What’s your real name?
Edison: Clark Kent.

D: Edison! Stop calling your brother names!!!
E: Then stop buying me books with name-calling.

E: Read me a story.
D: No, we’re going outside.
E: I want a story!
D: OK. There once were three little pigs. The end. How did you like that story?
E: I hated it!

E: Can you make me an Ironman Mask today?
D: Maybe tonight, I have to watch Adlai now.
E: I don’t have enough masks.
D: WHAT???
E: I only have like five!
D: What??? I made you 4 TMNT masks. A Spiderman mask, that’s 5. Captain America, that’s 6. Batman, that’s 7. Thor, that’s 8 masks. Who else are we missing?
E: Ironman.

E: I want soda.
D: Sorry, no,
E: Wahhh, whahh, I want soda.
D: No. You’re having water.
E: Dad no! I want soda.
D: No.
E: Whatever we say you have to do it!

E: We should go to China.
D: Why?
E: To get legos.
D: China is really far away.
E: No it’s not, China is like 70 inches away.

D: You need to listen next time and do what we tell you.
E: Dad, I was born this way!

E: Here is my invisible sword.
D: Ah, nice.
E: Yeah, it has guns all over it.

E: I looked at the sun and my eyes felt spicy.

E: Does our government always fight bad guys?
D: Well, sometimes we, the U.S., are the bad guys.
E: We are bad guys?
D: Sometimes. Sometimes the people in our government start wars for bad reasons, and that’s wrong. If we attack a country for the wrong reasons, then we would be the bad guys and the other country would be the good guys.
E: Are we always bad guys?
D: No. Sometimes our government does good things and sometimes it does bad things.
E: So our government is like Cat Woman?
D: Uhh...
E: She can be good and bad.
D: Exactly.

Mexico!

Having a little chat with Adlai about why it is impolite to cry by the pool.

Patricide.

Happy by the pool.

If Adlai won't go in the shade, the shade will go to Adlai.

I promise no more crying by the pool if you let me in.

Trying to get a good picture with Ema.

There's a good picture! (sans Adlai)

Aaand, so is that thing.

I can see Edison's future in showbusiness.
