Capturing the summer

Ok - so I had a goal of getting the latest blog update posted before Sliggy arrived...and I'm cutting it really close seeing how I've been admitted to labor and delivery today.  I may forget several things I wanted to write about, but at least I'll hopefully get this posted before we actually meet #3.

Alright - so we'll just go through all 3 and do an update for each. Sliggy, aka #3, has certainly had a more eventful pregnancy than the other two. And it appears the delivery is going to be a bit different as well. Due to me being "advanced maternal age", the OBs have been a bit more medical in their approach to this pregnancy. Plus I have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes (which I suspect I actually had with the other two, I just managed to not be diagnosed with it). So this means that for the last 6 weeks, I've had to be obsessive with my diet, checking blood sugars, and avoiding carbohydrates as much as I can. And I have never been more excited to be able to drink chocolate milk and eat a muffin than I am now! Even with the dietary restrictions, Sliggy was measuring above the 90th %ile 2 wks ago when we had an "urgent" ultrasound to make sure the baby was doing ok (which was perfectly fine). And here we are now, after my water broke this morning while at work. Since I'm not in active labor, I suspect this is going to be a much more medical delivery than hoped for, but as long as Sliggy gets here ok, whatever has to happen will just have to happen!

Adlai has had a seemingly fun summer. He just celebrated his 2nd birthday (pictures will be in the next blog post) with a day full of gymnastics, an OB visit, a nap, a trip to Bounceland, a trip to Jolay Orchards, and dinner with noodles and cake (ok - so I may have had a dinner there that did not adhere to my diabetic diet...).  He's continued to be an excellent imitator of all of Edison's moves and adds to his vocabulary every day. Most recently, he has decided he wants to be a cat. So he jumps around meowing and asking us to pet him. And jumping he does a lot - he has no problem jumping off of high objects, and has been progressively more fearless since starting gymnastics. He's really enjoying swimming as well, and had lots of fun in pools and the lake over the summer.

Edison is back in preschool and really enjoying himself there. He's doing great with reading words, and now moving on to sentences. He's learning strokes for swimming, and has had a great summer swimming and learning to swim underwater.  He has also mastered a two-wheel bike this summer - next year I plan on hitting the trails with him! He continues to have an obsession with super heroes, and now claims to strongly dislike all sorts of girl-oriented themes, like princesses.  Over the course of the summer we had some fun events, like our road trip up to Northern Michigan. We visited Michigan Adventure, the Great Wolf Lodge, Sleeping Bear Dunes, and the Call of the Wild Museum. We also got to meet up with Amy, Lee, Phoebe, and Milo in Chicago - Edison and Milo made fast friends, and Edison was introduced to Shawn the Sheep - a new favorite. In August we met up with Megan, Lincoln, Bennet, and Maya and had a fun day at the Discovery Zone, followed by pizza. We also got Grandpa Jim's fishing boat out and running on the river, and Edison began the first of I'm sure many lessons in how to fish. Granted, each trip out on the boat has been an adventure (the first time we nearly sank the boat, the second the engine stopped running about 20 ft from the dock...etc, etc), but at least we're learning a lot about boat mechanics! Plus there were visits with grandparents, aunts, and cousins to round out the summer.

I'm sure there were more specifics I wanted to comment on, but nothing is coming to mind right now! So on to the quotes, photos, and posting....and then we'll see if this little person decides to be a Halloween baby :)

E: Mom, when I’m big I’m going to be a doctor.
Me: Oh? What kind of doctor?
E: The same kind as you. And then I’m going to go to work with you.
Me: So we’re going to work at the same office? Ok.
E: Yeah. I’m going to work Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Thursday.
Me: So you won’t work Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday? What will you do those days?
E: I’m going to be a stay at home dad.
Me: Oh. Well, then who’s going to watch your kids while you’re at work?
E: There will be two stay at home dads.
Me: Ok, I see, so you’ll have another SAHD to watch the kids. That sounds good.
E: Yeah, dad will watch them.
Me: Oh - your dad is going to be your stay at home dad? I better let him know.
E: Yeah, and if he has to go somewhere, like Johnson’s Workbench, I’ll stay home with the kids. And if he’s going for a really long time, I’ll just have to get a babysitter.
Me: Hahaha. Ok, sounds like a plan.

(knock knock, a Jehova’s Witness is at the door)
Me: Edison, can you see who’s at the door?
E: Yeah, it’s somebody strange.
Me: Who does it look like?
E: Just a white guy with brown shorts. He looks really strange. You should go check him out. I think it’s Dr. Destructo.

(walking out of the DMV with dad)
E: That was boring. I didn’t enjoy it at all.

E: Hey guys, this is my helmet that I used to wear back in the 90’s. Back when I was a knight in shining armor.

(after arguing with me about what outfit to wear for the day)
E: Mom, I don’t feel like arguing with you right now. If you want to argue with someone, go find dad. Because I’m not in the mood to argue with you.

E: Mom, can I have dessert now?
Me: No, you just told me you had chocolate at Caleb’s house.
E: Mom, I was just kidding, I didn’t have chocolate there.
Me: Edison, why would you joke about eating chocolate earlier?
E: Because I did. I didn’t have any.
Me: Well, now I don’t know what to believe.
E: In God.
Me: Uhh, well, ok. Where did you get that?
E: From the Witness guys.

E: Have you ever been skydiving?
Me: No.
E: Has dad?
Me: Yes.
E: Dad, were you scared? How fast did you go?
Dad: It was intense, I think we were falling around 130mph.
E: Did mom go skydiving with you?
D: No, this was before mommy.
E: Did you sniff mommy when she came out?
D: What?
E: Did you sniff mommy when she came out?
D: Out of what?
E: Pamma's stomach.

E: Mom, I will love you forever.
Me: Oh, Edison, I will love you forever too.
E: Mommy, can you buy a lego that we can share?

D: Could you have touched the poison ivy when you got out of the car to pee?
E: Maybe, I was just paying attention to my weiner.

E: When I looked at the brown monster in the toilet, the brown monster looked back at me.

E: If you go look in the sheets, you won't find anything. Can you please go look in the sheets?

D: How did Adlai hurt his arm.
E: I didn’t do it.
D: You’re lying.
E: No I’m not.
D: How did he do it then?
E: I don’t know.
D: How?
E: He didn’t want to play anymore.
D: So how did he get hurt?
E: He was just on the bed.
D: How did he get hurt?
E: His arm, was just under him.
D: Were you touching him when he got hurt.
E: (shakes his head with his eyes closed).
D: Adlai, did Edison hurt your arm?
A: Yeah.
E: He’s lying.
D: No, you’re lying.
E: I’m trying to pretend to be good. So I don’t get more time outs. How do you know who is lying, me or Adlai?
D: You are lying.
E: How do you know.
D: Because you told me.

(at the Children's Museum, playing in the static electricity tunnels)
E: Come on Adlai! Let's play El Chapo and escape through these tunnels!
